Manuscript Type

Jurnal Laboratorium Khatulistiwa (JLK) accepts original research articles, review articles, and case studies in the field of Medical Laboratory Science and related health disciplines. Each manuscript must demonstrate scientific quality, methodological rigor, relevance to laboratory-based health practice, and a clear contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the relevant field.

1. Original Research Articles

Original research articles report the results of original scientific investigations that contribute new knowledge, evidence, methods, or innovations in Medical Laboratory Science and related health disciplines.

The journal welcomes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies, including experimental studies, observational studies, diagnostic accuracy studies, method validation, laboratory quality assurance, and other research designs relevant to the journal's scope.

Expected content:

  • A clear research problem, research question, and study objectives.

  • A relevant and up-to-date review of the scientific literature.

  • A detailed description of the study design, materials, methods, data collection, and analytical procedures.

  • Results presented clearly and supported by appropriate data and statistical analyses, where applicable.

  • A discussion interpreting the findings in relation to previous studies and their implications for laboratory science or healthcare practice.

  • Conclusions that address the research objectives, acknowledge relevant limitations, and highlight the scientific contribution of the study.

  • Appropriate ethical approval and informed consent statements, where applicable.

2. Review Articles

Review articles provide a critical and systematic synthesis of existing scientific evidence on topics relevant to Medical Laboratory Science and related health disciplines. They should identify current developments, evaluate the quality and consistency of available evidence, and highlight knowledge gaps and directions for future research.

JLK welcomes systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other critical reviews with a clearly defined purpose and appropriate methodology.

Expected content:

  • A clear review question, objective, and justification for the review.

  • A description of the literature search strategy, including information sources, search terms, and eligibility criteria, as applicable.

  • A transparent approach to study selection, data extraction, and evidence synthesis.

  • A critical appraisal and synthesis of relevant findings rather than a simple descriptive summary.

  • A discussion of the implications for laboratory science, diagnostic practice, healthcare, or future research.

  • Conclusions reflecting the available evidence and acknowledging the limitations of the review.

Systematic reviews should follow relevant reporting guidelines, such as PRISMA, where applicable.

3. Case Studies

Case studies describe and critically analyze clinically, diagnostically, or professionally significant cases relevant to Medical Laboratory Science and related health disciplines. They should provide meaningful insights into laboratory diagnosis, interpretation of laboratory findings, diagnostic challenges, laboratory procedures, or quality improvement.

Expected content:

  • A clear description of the case and its scientific or clinical significance.

  • Relevant patient or laboratory information presented in a structured and understandable manner.

  • A description of the diagnostic procedures, laboratory methods, findings, and interpretation, as applicable.

  • A discussion of the case in relation to relevant scientific literature and established laboratory practices.

  • Key lessons, implications for laboratory practice, and conclusions supported by the case.

  • Appropriate ethical approval or exemption, informed consent, and protection of patient confidentiality, as required by applicable regulations and institutional policies.

Case reports involving patients must ensure that identifying information is removed and that appropriate consent and ethical requirements are fulfilled.

General Requirements
